Fatty liver or hepatic steatosis is caused due to the buildup of fat in the liver. A little amount of fat in the liver is normal, but too much fat can cause health issues. Ayurveda explains fatty liver as Yakrit Roga (liver disorder) and also as Medaroga (body fat disorder) since both aspects are present in fatty liver. Types of Fatty Liver

The two main types of fatty liver disease include: non-alcoholic and alcoholic

NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)

When fat builds up in people who don’t drink a lot of alcohol, it’s known as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. When there is excess fat in your liver but no history of alcohol usage, you get diagnosed with NAFLD. If there’s no other complication present, it is simple NAFLD.

NASH or Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis is a type of NAFLD. This happens when the excess buildup of fat is accompanied by inflammation. You will be diagnosed with NASH if:

  • There is excess fat in your liver
  • The liver is inflamed
  • No history of heavy alcohol usage

When NASH is left untreated, it can cause other severe problems like liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, or liver failure.

AFLD (Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)

Drinking an abundance of alcohol can cause liver damage. The earliest stage of alcohol-related liver disease is AFLD. If no other complications are present, it is simple AFLD.
ASH or Alcoholic Steatohepatitis is a type of AFLD, where the buildup of fat is accompanied by inflammation. It’s also known as alcoholic hepatitis. You are most likely to be diagnosed with ASH if:

  • You have an excess buildup of fat in your liver.
  • Inflamed liver
  • Drinks a lot of alcohol

If alcoholic fatty liver is not treated properly, it can cause liver fibrosis. Severe cases of cirrhosis can also lead to liver failure.

AFLP (Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy)

AFLP is when fat builds up in your liver during pregnancy. It’s rare, but a serious complication. The exact cause of APLP is unknown, but genetics could be one of the reasons.
AFLP mostly develops during the trimester of pregnancy. It can cause serious risks to the mother and baby if AFLP is left untreated.
If you are diagnosed with AFLP, you’ll have to deliver your baby as soon as possible. After giving birth, you’ll have to go through some follow-up care for several days and your liver will be back to normal after some weeks of your delivery.

How Fatty Liver Occurs

Fatty liver problems occur due to a variety of reasons. In fatty liver disease, an excess amount of fat is accumulated in your liver.
The usage of too much alcohol can cause Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disorder. Heavy alcohol usage alters the metabolic process in the liver. Certain metabolic products present in the liver combine with fatty acids to form fats that accumulate in the liver.
The cause of fatty liver problems in people who consume less alcohol is unclear. It might be because their body produces too much fat or the metabolization of fat in their body is not efficient.
One or more factors from the following could also be a reason for NFLD:

  • Obesity
  • Insulin resistance
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • High levels of triglycerides in the blood
  • Other possible causes include:
  • Side effects from medications
  • Infections such as hepatitis C
  • Rare genetic conditions
  • Pregnancy

How we can treat Fatty Liver through Ayurveda

The Ayurvedic Treatment for Fatty Liver disease includes following the right lifestyle and diet management along with the use of herbs for an effective Ayurveda treatment
Fatty liver disease has no symptoms until it has progressed completely. The patient may feel some kind of heaviness in the upper abdomen, anorexia, tiredness, etc. It’s diagnosed by biopsy or imaging.
In the Ayurvedic context, the disease that occurs in the abdominal cavity that causes distension in the abdomen is Udararoga. Even though there has been a constant effort in modern science and drug discovery, they have very little to offer. However, Ayurveda has shown promising results with its classical proprietary and patented formulations.
In Ayurveda, fatty liver problems are connected with pleehodar. All medicines that come under pleehodar can be used for yakrutodar or liver diseases.
