Udvartanam is one of the Ayurvedic treatments for weight loss. It is a unique deep tissue therapy utilizing herbal powders. In this method, the body may be coated with herbal oils, and then herbal powders called Choornams are rubbed forcibly on the body in the upward direction. Udvartanam is done by an Ayurvedic practitioner. The Udvartanam Ayurvedic treatments give good results and the therapy techniques are done in seven postures by applying suitable pressure to break down the fat below the skin. The herbal powder is applied, and the therapy is executed for about 15-45 minutes. This is closed by complete rest for half an hour, followed by steam and bath.
By forming heat through therapy, this procedure melts the excess fat that is stored in the body. It increases the blood circulation, strengthens the body and enhances skin smoothness. Certain skin diseases can be treated with Udvartanam.

There Are Mainly Two Types Of Udvartanam:

  1. Sneha
  2. Ruksha

Sneha Udvartanam is therapy with dry powder and medicated oils. This kind of therapy is helpful in developing skin texture and is suggested for skin rejuvenation and certain skin disorders. Ruksha Udvartanam is performed only with dry powders. Since the therapy is rough and dry, it helps in decreasing weight and the Kapha Dosha.

HERBS USED IN UDVARTANAM:
Triphala is the powder usually used in this method. It is a blend of unique nerve stimulating agents such as myrobalan and gooseberry. Other generally applied herbs are the roots Cestus, deodar, Senna, horse gram, Phyllanthus and mustard. Horse gram and mustard, which is estimated hot in nature which is a very great nerve stimulator.

PROCEDURE:
The warmed herbal powder is pressed in the opposing direction of hair follicles. The method is done in seven postures. If the skin is over sensitive, olive oil or sesame oil is combined with the herbal medicine. Allow the victim to rest. After 15 to 20 minutes gap of rest, a bath by lukewarm water is practiced. A little bit of moisturizing of the skin is done after a bath.

DURATION:
It is done for 45 minutes to one hour.
